Official Profile of Kerala

Kerala is one of the four southern states of the Union of India. Post Independence, by merging small states of Travancore and Cochin with the Malabar Province from Madras Presidency, Kerala was formed on 1st November 1956. It is the furtherest South-West State of India, surrounded by Karnataka and Tamil Nadu on land and facing the Arabian Sea to its West, the state covers 38,863 sq km area.

The State capital is located at Thiruvananthapuram city, which is also one of the districts of the state. In all, the state is divided into 14 districts. About one half of the population is dependent on agriculture and cash crops are predominant - coconut, rubber, pepper, cardamom, ginger, cocoa, cashew, coffee, tea and spices like nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves are cultivated. Major industrial activities are in traditional form like handloom, coir, handicrafts etc.. Though there is ample scope for giant industrial leap in the state. The minerals resources in the state include ilmenite, rutile, monozite, zircon, sillimanite, clay and quartz sand.

Nature has given Kerala its deep blessings for sustained and successful growth of Tourism. Beautiful beaches, warm weather, back-waters, rivers, hill stations, water falls, forests, wild life, Ayurveda, year-round festivities and variety of natural beauty spread all around make Kerala a unique destination for domestic and international tourists. The State has an excellent road network, trunk rail routes, important airports at Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode; and a major Port at Kochi with 17 minor ports. Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi are international airports.
