Official Profile of Karnataka

Karnataka is one of the four southern states of the Union of India. Post Independence , before being named as Karnataka in 1973, it was called as Mysore State - unified after the freedom movement and created in 1956. Surrounded by Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala on land and facing the Arabian Sea to its West, the state covers 1,91,791 sq km area.

The State capital is located at Bengaluru City (erstwhile Bangalore City ), which is also one of the districts of the state. In all, the state is divided into 27 districts. Agriculture and allied activities are the majority occupation of the People here. The State has been one of the front runners in industrial growth and today, it is one of the most preferred destination for foreign investment. Having done exceptionally well on the industrial front, it is the hub of skilled manpower and major research and development centres. The state has been blessed with rich mineral deposits. Major minerals found in the state are gold iron ore, copper, manganese, chromite, limestone, clay, kaonite, silica sand, molding sand, felsite etc.

Karnataka has plenty to offer to domestic and international tourists. Main attractions include forts, Museums, lakes, temples, hills and Valleys, wildlife, tea/coffee plantations, ports and other natural and man made structures. The State has well knit Rail-Road network, important airports at Bangalore , Belgaum , Mangalore and Hubli; and a major port at Mangalore. Bangalore Airport is an international airport as well.
